Sacramento First Church of the Nazarene began Meeting in a rental hall in downtown Sacramento in the Spring of 1922. The 'Gospel Tabernacle' was erected here at the corner of 28th and 'S' Streets in the Fall of 1922. The original sign over the door read Gospel Tabernacle, Church of the Nazarene, Strangers Welcome. In the Spring of 1923, a white frame structure replaced the portable tabernacle, and in 1924 the sides of the building were expanded. Construction on a brick building began in 1930, and services were held at nearby Sacramento Plating until the completion of the new building in 1931. In 1949, the building was expanded with the addition of the Gardner Annex, a new main sanctuary. Finally in 1967, ground was broken for the beautiful new sanctuary which we enjoy today. It was completed in 1969, and a sign proclaimed New Sanctuary - First Church of the Nazarene. The unusual curved beams in the sanctuary have special symbolism. They curve out and upward from the cross above the platform, and were designed to represent God's care, concern and compassion towards all. |
Sacramento First Church of the Nazarene - © 2004 - All rights Reserved Holy Spirit - The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He is present in the world to make us aware of our need for Jesus Christ. He is also available to the individual Christian to provide power to cleanse our hearts and motives from sinful habits of thought and purpose, help us understand our spiritual gifts, and provide guidance in doing what is right. Salvation - Salvation is a gift from God to mankind. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God's offer of forgiveness can we be saved from sin's penalty. Eternal life begins the moment we receive Jesus Christ into our life, by faith, as our personal Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ - Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is coequal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven's glory and will return again to earth to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Eternity - We all were created to exist forever. We will exist eternally separated from God by sin, or in union with God through forgiveness and salvation. The place of eternal separation from God is called Hell. Heaven is the place of eternal union and eternal life with God. The Bible - The Bible is God's Word to all mankind. It was written by human authors, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it provides all truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it provides all truth necessary to guide us to salvation and holy living. Spiritual Gifts - The gifts of the Holy Spirit are available to each believer in Jesus Christ, allowing for greater intimacy with God and power for accomplishing His work in our world today. We believe that God, the giver of gifts, gives severally as He wills. As we grow mature in Jesus Christ, those gifts are revealed and can then be used to powerfully influence and affect our world for Christ. Mankind - We are all made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. We are the supreme object of God's creation. Although mankind had tremendous potential for good, we are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called "sin". This attitude separates of from God. God - God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are coequal and are the one and only God.
